The history of the neighborhood goes back more than a hundred years, as it was inhabited by foreigners coming to work in Egypt, the first and most prominent of whom was the wealthy Belgian baron and owner of major projects and companies; Baron Empain, and the residents of the neighborhood were keen to imitate their homes and European environment, so they built palaces and villas in the European architectural style, and brought in leading European engineers for this.
To transport residents to and from the neighborhood and across its suburbs, a French company implemented the first electric metro line in the Middle East, which would later be known as the Heliopolis Metro.
Over the years, the neighborhood developed, its area increased, its buildings were built, and new buildings appeared. Although the government was keen to preserve the ancient character of the neighborhood, it enacted laws and regulations that prevented the demolition of its historical buildings, which preserved the neighborhood's high social level. Even after the July Revolution and the departure of most of the neighborhood's residents to their countries, the neighborhood was inhabited by the elite of Egyptian society, which maintained its luster and fame as an upper-class neighborhood. The neighborhood was inhabited by a group of ministers, thinkers, and artists, which made the state pay great attention to it.
The neighborhood is located in eastern Cairo and its area reaches about 9 square kilometers and is inhabited by about 136 thousand people. The neighborhood is close to several important areas and neighborhoods in Cairo, such as: Al-Zeitoun, Nasr City, Ain Shams, and Al-Waili.
New Cairo includes areas with various levels such as:
Al-Merghany Street
Al-Thawra Street
Al-Korba
