Maadi owes its inception to Khedive Ismail (1830-1895), who decided in the late 19th century to invest in the Helwan area, 25 kilometers south of Cairo, by establishing a tourist resort in the small city with its lush gardens and sulfuric springs. Its proximity to Pharaonic archaeological sites like Saqqara and Giza made it a target for Western tourism programs. In 1868, Ismail sent a group of experts, including his personal physician, to Helwan to explore the nature of its springs and the potential for development and investment.
The experts highlighted the significant medical properties of Helwan's springs, prompting Khedive Ismail to build a palace there in 1877, which he gifted to his mother, naming it "Qasr al-Walida". This encouraged members of the royal family, wealthy Egyptians, and foreigners to construct luxurious palaces and villas in the area. This led to connecting Helwan to Cairo via a railway line in 1880 to facilitate access. With the opening of a new railway line in 1889, investors began purchasing land adjacent to the tracks, and by the early 20th century, the Mooser family, prominent leaders of the Jewish community at the time, acquired significant portions of the Maadi subdivision after purchasing it from the Delta Lands Company established by the British aristocracy in Egypt.
Canadian officer Adams planned the city as a residential quarter with a uniform layout in the British colonial style, featuring straight streets and two-story villas with front gardens filled with rare ornamental trees.
