Historical Background of Maadi:
Maadi owes its origins to Khedive Ismail (1830 - 1895), who, at the end of the 19th century, decided to invest in the Helwan area, located 25 kilometers south of Cairo. He envisioned a health resort in the small town known for its lush gardens and sulfuric springs, and its proximity to Pharaonic archaeological sites such as Saqqara and Giza, making it a target for Western tourist programs. In 1868, Ismail sent a group of experts, including his personal physician, to Helwan to explore the nature of its springs and the potential for development and investment. The experts highlighted the significant medical properties of the Helwan springs, leading Khedive Ismail to build a palace there in 1877, which he gifted to his mother and named "The Mother’s Palace."
The construction of the palace encouraged members of the royal family, wealthy individuals, and foreigners to build grand palaces and villas in the area. This prompted the connection of Helwan to Cairo via a railway line in 1880 to facilitate access. With the opening of the new railway line in 1889, investors began purchasing land adjacent to the road. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Mousseri family, one of the leaders of the Jewish community at the time, acquired large areas in the Maadi district from the Delta Land Company established by the British aristocracy in Egypt.
